Grimes – A beautiful woman, with a dark side
Claire Boucher of Grimes sounds like a pop star from a distant planet. By sounding a little bit like everything you’ve ever heard, Grimes somehow succeeds in sounding like nothing you’ve ever heard. It’s impossible not to be drawn to her. The eyes, the cheekbones, the dirty blonde hair with a pink fringe. She’s everything most people dream their daughter will never turn out like, but she’s better than that, she’s an outright genius. Post Gaga, Grimes offers a fresh breath of synthesised air for those slightly tired of the dramatic pop amalgamations currently littering our internet.
Upon releasing her third album entitled Visions on Artubus Records, Boucher reveals she went slightly insane and got caught trying to open a new tab in her brain during the recording of it. The music certainly says so. So does her heady, lisping falsetto. The electronic punch drunk, half dream/half nightmare you are transported into is an outstanding invite into Boucher’s peculiar kind of bliss.
The 23-year old from Montreal came across her musical output when a friend showed her the workings of Apple’s Garage Band music creation software. The cohesive, focused and assured take on 90’s R&B twinkle with a demonic, robotic and beat laden output sounds like 26 possessed iPad’s all set to repeat on the same Aphex Twin track but starting at slightly different times. The finished article is other worldly.
For Grimes the fashion icon, as I’m sure she would hate to be referred to as, a recent trip to New York fashion week and a recent video for début track Oblivion just highlights her unique style. She’s going for it, in a niche carved out by fellow solo artist Lykke Li. Creating beauty out of slightly dark, daunting things is a passion for Grimes. Whilst performing her oversized ripped punk t-shirts, and muted palettes, contrast with delicate gauzy fabrics and pink/grey/blonde hair. Effortless, gritty, grunge, electro dream pop oozes from her every move. The Oblivion video has Boucher dancing around an American football stadium whilst the match is under way, what follows is completely ad-hoc. Totally original and entirely effective. Low budget fun and easy to access. Grimes is doing what she wants, how she wants. This might just be the start of something very big, then again the sheer psychedelic velocity it all may just cause Grimes to implode. Who cares, it’s fun for now.
She’s goofy and she’s hot because of it. She makes damn fine music too. Three albums down and Grimes is just beginning to rumble. Know The Way…
